LADY GAGA PRODUCER GETS HIT WITH $7.3 MILLION VERDICT; MUST PAY SONGWRITER FOR WELSHING ON PROMISE TO SHARE PART OF INCOME
Lady Gaga is no stranger to controversy. Recently, some of that controversy has been resolved in a New Jersey courtroom.
A federal jury in Newark, New Jersey awarded a songwriter 7.3 million dollars. A record producer credited with launching the career of Lady Gaga will have to pay the judgment. The songwriter had sued the producer. She claimed that she was responsible for introducing the producer to the star. She further asserted that the producer broke a promise. He had allegedly agreed to give her a portion of his income from his association with Lady Gaga.
The jury awarded the songwriter 50 percent of the approximately 12 million dollars that the producer earned from Gaga’s career. The songwriter also will receive a one-time payment of $900,000. That money represents half of the record and merchandising royalties the producer will reap in the future. The songwriter will also get 50 percent of any funds the producer earns in any future Lady Gaga record deals.
Don’t feel too sorry for the losing party. The producer may have a good source of income to pay the songwriter. Several years ago, the producer sued Lady Gaga. He demanded thirty million dollars compensation. He claimed he had found Lady Gaga a recording contract. That case was settled in 2010. The amount the producer was paid is confidential.
If you ever feel that you have been cheated out of money that you are entitled to, act immediately. The law limits the time you have to sue. If you miss the deadline, you will not recover anything. Even if your case was a good one.
