Special Jury Instruction If God Told You To Do It

A New Jersey man was convicted at trial of murdering his pregnant girlfriend after God told him to do it. Not surprisingly, the defendant pled insanity. An appeals court recently reversed the conviction. The appellate court ruled that the trial judge should have told the jury that even if they thought that the man knew his act was against the law, they could still find him insane if the evidence indicated that he killed her only because he thought he was ordered to by God.

The man allegedly became obsessed with the Bible after fathering two children out of wedlock. When he thought that his girlfriend was trying to convince him to pray to a different god, he shot and stabbed her. He confessed when he was arrested, and again during his trial. He will now have a new trial.

Remember folks, I don’t make the law, I just write about it.
